I received a letter from DMV revoking my license. Now what?
North Carolina DMV sends out letters when they revoke your license. Depending on the reason for the revocation, you may be eligible to request a hearing. Requesting a hearing will prevent your license from going into suspension pending the hearing, so long as the request is made before the suspension date. The suspension date is often very soon after the time you receive the letter, so it is important to act fast.
To request a hearing you must submit a hearing request form along with payment of the hearing request fee. DMV Attorney Kristi Haddock can handle this entire process for you. Fee’s for hearing requests vary, the amount should be outlined in the letter you receive from DMV, or you can view the hearing request fee schedule here.
Once your request has been submitted to DMV you should expect your suspension to be stopped. IF you do not make the request before the scheduled suspension date, you may still be able to request a hearing but should expect a suspension of your license pending the approval of your hearing request. DMV Attorney Kristi Haddock will work with you to expedite the process to minimize the amount of time your license is suspended.
Once your hearing request is received by DMV they will assign you a hearing date. The time frame for hearings vary depending on the DMV backlog. During COVID, there has been a greater delay in hearings. Waiting around 6 months for a hearing is common.
